WHY DO TEETH STAIN?

Teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons, some of which are preventable, and some that are simply due to factors that are out of your control. Knowing the ways that your teeth can become stained can help you avoid future discoloration once you’ve received your treatment as well. Here are some habits and certain conditions that can impact the color of your smile:

  • Stain-Causing Foods & Beverages: Coffee, black tea, red wine, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, and many other goods are high in tannins, which is a compound known to cause dental discoloration.
  • Tobacco Use: Smoking and chewing tobacco can cause yellowing teeth.
  • Bad Oral Hygiene: Without regular brushing and flossing, the whiter part of your teeth, the enamel, can erode and reveal the more yellow structure underneath, called the dentin.
  • Illness or Disease Influenced by Genetics: Some people’s enamel develops differently, making their teeth appear more yellow than white.
  • Certain Medications: Certain antibiotics and medical treatments such as chemotherapy can cause teeth to discolor.

UNDERSTANDING THE COST OF TEETH WHITENING

Are you eager to enhance the natural beauty of your smile? Teeth whitening could be the solution that you’ve been looking for. It is an effective way to address discoloration in a short period of time. However, it is important that you consider the cost beforehand so that you don’t have any unnecessary surprises on your bill. Here are some things for you to take into consideration.

Piggy bank full of money

Teeth whitening is generally one set price, but several different factors can affect how many treatments you will need before achieving your desired results. Here are some of the most prominent:

  • The severity of your discoloration.
  • The type of discoloration you have (intrinsic vs. extrinsic).
  • Other treatments that you may need beforehand (fillings, dental crowns, etc.)
Factors that Affect the Cost of Teeth Whitening

Several types of teeth whitening options exist, and they all have different price points. Here is what you can expect to pay when it comes to these treatments:

  • In-Office Teeth Whitening: This usually costs between $300 and $800. In some cases, it can cost upwards of $1000.
  • Take-Home Teeth Whitening: The cost is usually around a few hundred dollars for professional take-home whitening kits.
  • Over-the-Counter Trays: Usually, teeth whitening trays that you find over the counter are less than $100.
  • Over-the-Counter Strips/Gels: This is the most affordable option out there. These boxes usually cost between $20 and $40 and contain enough to last up to 2 weeks.

You may be wondering why professional teeth whitening from dentists is so common when it costs significantly more than what you can get from your local drugstore. However, you should remember that with cosmetic dentistry of any kind, the quality of the outcome is clearly reflected in the amount that you pay. When choosing which type of teeth whitening is right for you, be sure to consider the kinds of results that you’re looking for and how quickly you want them.

TEETH WHITENING FAQS

Are you about to get your teeth whitened? For your convenience, our cosmetic dentist in Dallas has answered some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from our patients below.

How long do results last?

While teeth whitening results vary from person to person, they typically last between one to three years. If our patients notice that their teeth are becoming slightly discolored, we may recommend coming in for a quick touch-up or using teeth whitening toothpaste occasionally at home. To extend the lifespan of your results, we recommend avoiding stain-causing foods and beverages and being mindful of your bad oral habits that could cause your teeth to discolor. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how you can get the most out of your cosmetic treatment, be sure to contact our office.

How much will it cost to whiten my teeth?

The cost of teeth whitening treatment can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the products being used. However, in-office treatment is the most cost-effective option because results are virtually guaranteed. Once we’ve determined that you’re a good candidate for the procedure, we can walk you through the cost of your customized treatment. You’ll be able to get noticeable results within a day of procedure. Plus, you’ll be able to trust that the products we use won’t damage your smile, like over-the-counter kits may.

Is teeth whitening bad for you?

Some patients avoid teeth whitening because they believe it’s bad for the health of your mouth. While this may be the case with countless over-the-counter products that haven’t been approved by the ADA, it’s definitely not the case with the products that we use in our office. Zoom! Teeth Whitening has been tested and proven to not cause enamel erosion. That means that you won’t have to worry about taking a gamble on your oral health in order to achieve fast and effective results!

Can teeth whitening cause your teeth to become sensitive?

Different teeth whitening products can cause different side-effects depending on what the active ingredients are. We use a specially formulated whitening gel that contains ingredients that reduces dental sensitivity while deeply penetrating your enamel to break apart stubborn surface stains. Whether you choose our in-office or take-home kit, you won’t have to worry about uncomfortable sensitivity during or following your treatment.

Should I choose in-office or take-home whitening?

The type of whitening you choose really depends on what your goals are for your smile. If you have an important event coming up and you want your smile to look as beautiful as possible and get it done quickly, you can’t go wrong with in-office whitening. However, if you find yourself traveling often, you don’t have time to schedule a dental appointment in-person, or you don’t mind completing treatment over the course of two weeks on your own time, a take-home kit just might be more appropriate.

Will tooth whitening work on restorations?

Unfortunately, the materials used in ceramic and composite resins do not react to the bleaching ingredients used in whitening products. This means your restorations will need to be replaced if they are heavily stained and do not currently match your newly whitened tooth enamel. Thankfully, teeth whitening does not damage restorations, so you won’t have to worry about that if this happens to be your concern. Our dentists will discuss your cosmetic options in more detail in order to create a smile makeover plan that keeps your teeth bright and stain-free throughout!

Will my insurance cover teeth whitening treatment?

Teeth whitening is considered to be a cosmetic treatment, which means that it’s very unlikely that your dental insurance will offer coverage for it. Instead, it’s worth taking a look at other methods for financing care if you can’t afford the out-of-pocket costs. For example, we do offer financing options that let you pay for treatments over the next several months, rather than all in one lump sum. Additionally, our VIP in-house membership plan offers a 15 percent discount on teeth whitening treatment!

Am I too old to receive teeth whitening?

Many people believe that they may be too old to receive teeth whitening, but as long as the patient has good oral health, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to receive teeth whitening treatment. Keep in mind that we do not recommend treatment for those who have exposed tooth roots. This can lead to significant teeth sensitivity, which can be quite uncomfortable. With a few rounds of whitening, you can easily look 10 years younger!
